What is the Theophilus Project?

The Theophilus Project charts my progress – the joys, challenges, sources, and shape – towards the goal of writing a three-volume systematic theology. More importantly, the Theophilus Project is about seeking, celebrating, and walking in the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

What is the current status of the Theophilus Project?

Well, some of the most important words have already been written: the ones that make up the contract with Baker Academic! As of the summer of 2019, the broad outline is gradually beginning to take shape.

What has been the most difficult challenge thus far?

That's easy: deciding upon an appropriate form. For, if the subject matter of theology – the self-communication of the triune God – determines not only the way it comes to be known but also, at least to some extent, the way it is to be made known, then one must wrestle with what form or forms are most conducive and transparent to that subject matter.

Will your systematic theology be a rehash of themes drawn from your earlier work (e.g., theodrama), or are you looking to make a fresh start, with a new metaphor perhaps?

It will be organic, in the sense of cohering with who I am, what I have read, what I have learned, and what I have written. To stake an entirely new position, or adopt an entirely new perspective would not make sense. Having said that, I have continued to grow in my understanding of how various doctrines fit together, and I have what I think will be a fresh take on familiar themes.
